This may not be your idea of a welcomed house guest...

Share --------------------------------------------------------------------------------
But what can I say? I am enjoying having this little jewel of nature perform his magic metamorphosis right in front of my eyes. I only regret not having taken photographs earlier, when he was just a little larva about an inch long.  He  managed to sneak into our kitchen on some broccoli I had plucked out of the garden.   Truth is, for a few days, I wasn't certain he was still alive! But today, I had proof.   Not only can I see his wings beginning to form  but, if you look closely at the photos clockwise, you'll see he wagged his tail at me and you!    Part of my confusion was the lack of a real visible chrysalis that would resemble my 'internal image' of a cocoon.  After researching, I've learned this species only has a very thin, barely visible  light green chrysalis.  If my sources are accurate, in about 4-7 days he should be near completion of this miraculous phenomenum of nature.

So, please be honest,  would you let a caterpillar live on your kitchen wall?  And if so, would you give him a name?  If you answer No, then would you give my Pupa a name?  And do you think he should have more than one name? One for each of his stages?   And, now knowing what I've disclosed, would you accept an invitation to have dinner at our home?  :0)

That's fascinating. I wouldn't let one make a cocoon on my wall, but I'm glad to see yours. I would probably give it a name - maybe Gregor Samsa after the character in Kafka's Metamorphosis. This wouldn't bother me at all if I were coming over for dinner.
On a different note, I once knew some college guys who had a mushroom growing in their bathroom. Female friends came over and cleaned their bathroom because they couldn't stand it. The guys were really upset about the mushroom. Very different from your cocoon though, as this was a filth issue.

Trudi, I so LOVE your blog!!!!!
Yes, I'd let him live in my kitchen, would probably name him though probably not each stage, and a big yes to dinner too. I loved bugs when I was a kid and our youngest inherited my fascination. We had all manner of creepy crawlies in the house when he was growing up! My kids said I was the weirdest mom they knew, and they liked it that way. I'll be watching for the final installment.

That is awesome! You should name your friend. We once had a large orb spider who lived just outside our door. We named it Drop Dead Fred until we found out it was a lady. Changed her name to Fredricka instead.

PQ - I know I could not have a pet spider I am a severe arachniphobe - don't even like seeing the word...
Christine - great idea re: Kafka but omg, about the fungi! What kind of mushroom? Having been a drug rep for a company that sold an anti-fungal, this really creeps me out. Although I can recall cleaning teenage boyfriend bathrooms that were filthy enough to grow anything.

Okay, I have to say that is a bit creepy. But, I would probably leave it, name it, once, and watch it grow! Ha ha! My name for "him" (?) would be Cabbage Patch! Happy dining! Riki

I think it is fascinating and so beautiful!

Once we had a monarch chrysalis and it had a golden vein running through it...maybe it was a painted lady butterfly...not certain

such a thrill to be able to watch Mother Nature at work

I'd be so bloody fascinated, I think that's I'd forget to eat!!! What a great gift from Mother Nature, Trudi. I'm definitely going to give my broccoli a 2nd and 3rd look!!!

BTW - the whole mushroom/bathroom this is freaking me out!!!! I can't even begin to imagine . . . . It's taking me to a place I don't want to visit!!! LOL!!!! Hugs, Terri xoxo

PS This little guy would DEFINITELY be 'named'!!!

Actually, I think it must have been pretty exciting to wait and finally watch the new beginnings.
